Current Work: X-Ray Image Processing and Visualization for Remote Assistance of Airport Luggage Screeners

Image enhancement, image segmentation, pseudo coloring and image fusion techniques are explored to seek approaches effective to distinguish different objects in luggage scenes, especially potential threats. Several unique color-coding algorithms and dual-energy x-ray image fusion algorithms are proposed and implemented.

X-ray Image Segmentation - Extracting distinct objects from x-ray scans for further analysis and processing, as a preprocessing step in x-ray image enhancement.

X-ray Grayscale Image Enhancement - Varieties of grayscale image enhancement approaches are studied and applied to x-ray luggage scans. To simplify the processing procedures of x-ray luggage images and to assist us in judging (sequences of) enhancement approaches, X-ray Image Processing (XIP) application are developed

Pseudo-Coloring of X-ray Luggage Scans - Pseudo-coloring techniques are employed to enhance x-ray luggage images due to the fact that human can discern thousands of color shades and intensities, compared to about only two dozen shades of gray. On the basis of the features of color models, as well as the characteristics of human color perception and the physical properties of color, various RGB-based color transforms and HSI-based color transforms are designed and implemented.

Dual-Energy X-Ray Image Fusion - Dual-energy x-ray image fusion is to integrate complementary information from low-energy x-ray image and high-energy x-ray image such that the produced new image is more suitable for airport screeners’ interpretation.

Wireless Tablet PC-Based Remote Supervision - Remote supervision system (RSS) is designed and developed to process tough pieces of luggage remotely using image processing algorithms at the requests of front-end explosive detection systems (EDS) at airport luggage checking points and also to remotely check any chosen front-end EDS at the requests of back-end supervisory machines.
